Beginner Dissection Camp!
Class experience
In this multi-day camp that meets four times in one week, we will be focusing on a different dissection each day. In class one, we will be get acquainted with our dissection tools and dissect our first specimen.....a hot dog! In class two, we will be dissecting a preserved earthworm which is very similar to the hot dog technique we learned. In class three, we move to a marine animal and dissect a starfish and for our last class, we will culminate with dissecting a clam. Get ready to perfect...
After this summer camp, students will successfully have passed the beginner dissection techniques and be ready to move onto Intermediate classes.
I was a middle school science teach for 10 years (and a homeschool parent for another 10) and in that time, have lead hundreds of students through many dissections including the hot dog, earthworms, clams, crayfish, and sharks. In my college Zoology class, I was the only student to successfully extract the entire spinal nerve of a crayfish that the professor had ever had! I find dissections fascinating and a good stepping stone for any student interested in anatomy, physiology, zoology, or college sciences.
Students need to have eye-hand coordination enough to handle some tools that are sharp. Students need to be mature enough, in parents/guardians estimation, to be safe around sharp tools.
7 files available upon enrollmentHome Science Tools (homesciencetools.com) is not the only place to purchase a dissection kit or the three specimens; however, they are who I personally use because they are very cost effective. Amazon, Carolina Biological, and Ward Science are a few other options to look at. They have a dissection kit for approximately $12, the earthworm cost is approximately $2, the starfish approximately $5, and the clam $4. Amazon also has a dissection kit for roughly $15. You will need to purchase one earthworm, one starfish, and one clam along with a dissection kit. You will also need two uncooked hot dogs for our first class. Students will also need a clean place to work on their dissection (it can get messy!) so a paper plate, plate, paper towels....something that is easy to clean up.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Dissection kits contain sharp tools. It is at the discretion of the parent to make sure your student is mature enough to independently operate them during a dissection.
I will be on vacation from April 5-20th. I will still be answering messages but may be slower in doing so than usual as some of the time I am gone, I will not have access to wifi/cell phone data. Hello students and parents! I am a former...
