Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner Level
In this self-paced course, the student will be taught beginner crochet in a fun relaxed environment. This course is the first part of a series of courses in crochet. The student does not need any prior experience. Please make sure that the student has the recommended and required class supplies and materials. In the first class, we will learn the history of crochet and how it originated. We will then learn how to slip knot, single crochet, half-double crochet, and double crochet.. The student will watch video clips from the teacher and we will have an open discussion on the Outschool message board. The teacher will use a I do, you do method. The videos will have close ups and are visually clear for the student to see. There will also be some reading homework in the recommended texts. All students should work together and collaborate on their projects. Be a support for one another and the teacher will help with their needs. The students should post pictures of their progress either in a direct message to the teacher or on the classroom board. Once a week the teacher may plan a private meeting to help and see how the students are progressing through the course. This will allow the students to show and ask questions on the material. Please refer to the parental guidance section for classroom rules and policies.

The student will learn abbreviations, how to read patterns, understand gauge and it's importance, and several different stitch patterns/designs. The student will practice creating swatches. The teacher will provide the patterns. The course will be accessible for 10 weeks and the student will be required to complete a project at the end of the course. The teacher will also test the students knowledge by giving quizzes and open ended questions and essays. The students will also create flashcards for homework, and will be prepared to play a game to see who can explain or tell the teacher the stitch abbreviation or can explain how to do a stitch. The student will be able to reach the teacher on the Outschool messaging system and class discussion board. Please plan to submit all material and photos of projects by week 10 for a final grade and assessment. The following will be presented in each lesson.

Lesson 1- Yarn and binding/casting on and the slip stitch foundational chain
Lesson 2- Foundational chain and single crochet
Lesson 3- Let's keep building with half-double crochet
Lesson 4- Double crochet

Learning Needs
Younger students may need the support of a parent or guardian.
Parental Guidance
Although parents are welcomed as a support and encouragement in class, remember that the student must be the one to answer the teacher audibly. The parent(s) should never be visible on camera, especially in a group class. If there are distractions or technical issues, class may be stopped, as the student will not be effectively learning. There will be no refund for these issues. Additionally, if a student is 10 minutes late, class will be canceled and there will be no refund. However, the teacher may give the student a discount, if the parent reaches out, for a future class and a scheduling issue. Students should make sure you they are paying attention to the teacher and repeating the teacher when possible. Make sure there are no distractions. Please DO NOT wear hats or distracting clothing in class, as this can not only be distracting to the teacher, but also other students. Make sure that students remain polite and do not use foul language or chew gum in class. There will not be any usage of third party resources in this course that require the student to log in or create accounts in this class. The teacher will provide the materials (such as the handwriting ledger paper) as a PDF once the student is enrolled in the course. If a student or family member has an emergency or does not believe they can make it to class at their scheduled time, please notify the teacher within 12 hours of class start time. You may then reschedule or cancel class. Under 12 hours before class, please note that the teacher will have to charge for class and there will be no refund. Outschool will be helpful with this situation, as well as the teacher, so feel free to reach out. I hope that you will enjoy our class together and join this artful Adventure. See you soon in the classroom.
