👋 Hi! I'm Dr. Emberton and it is super nice to meet you on Outschool! I've been a public school teacher for ten years and worked in the private business sector for ten years before my time in the classroom. Let me tell you a little more about this opportunity. Deciding to teach on Outschool was a BIG deal for me! During the day, I still work with homeschool students but I am very passionate about computer science and technology skills. Sharing these skills at every moment is my calling! Thus the choice to provide this opportunity for you! In these introductory sessions, we will going through the lessons developed for my computer science students. These lessons do not build upon each other but it would be helpful to know as we progress. Each lesson has a quick recap (after the initial first class), a learning target, an opportunity to practice, and a short assessment. Note that these are basic lessons and cover basic vocabulary to introduce students to computer science topics. The goal is to chunk computer science topics into easy to understand weekly topics. Here's an overview of what the topics include: Week of 11/21/2022 Lesson 1: ▪️ FOUR COMMON TASK I can identify and describe the four task common to all computing technology. vocabulary:, Input, Output, Processing, Storage Week of 11/28/2022 Lesson 2: ▪️ HOW A COMPUTER WORKS I can explain computer problems with accurate vocabulary. vocabulary: hardware · software · Motherboard · Keyboard (input) · Printer (output) · CPU · Power Source · RAM · monitor · fan ·hard drive Week of 12/5/2022 Lesson 3: ▪️ Binary System: My Computer's Language I can write in Binary Code to better understand how hardware & software interact to collect and exchange data vocabulary: Bytes · Bit · Binary Code Week of 12/12/2022: ▪️ Impacts of Technology I can compare the historical impacts (positive and negative) of technology. vocabulary: Slate · projection · films · radio · distance education · computers · software · World Wide Web (www) · Internet · Connected · Collaboration · Communication Week of 12/19/2022: ▪️ Predicting the Future of Technology I can predict future impacts of technology on our culture. vocabulary: predictions Week of 1/9/2023: ▪️ Private vs Public Posting Online I can list the pros and cons to keeping information private or public. Teacher expertise and credentials
Dr. Jennifer Emberton is a graduate from Western Kentucky University and Morehead State University. She began her career in technology at eighteen, working for local companies. After her oldest son started school, his bilateral hearing loss deterred him from learning opportunities. Through this struggle, Dr. Emberton gave up her previous training to focus on learning more about helping her son. In 2012 she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Middle Grades education, followed two years later by a masters degree in Library Media with an additional certification in Educational Technology. As her son graduated from high school, she finished her EdD in hopes of helping others with workforce readiness in our community. Computer Science and technology is my jam! Request a topic in these areas and I'll do my best to design a learning plan that helps!
