Homework
1-2 hours per week. - 5 challenges per week, to develop the skill/theme explained in the video for the week. - The first 4 are ones I set and the last is to challenge them to make up their own task along the same theme. The time the challenges will take depends on how quickly your child picks up the coding but as it is a flex class they have the freedom to take as long as they need. - Each challenge will involve drawing the challenge on the worksheet provided, as well as writing the code. - Once completed the worksheet needs to be sent back to me as a picture, I will use the code to program and record the robot completing their code, which I then send back as a video.
Assessment
Your child will be able to see how successful they were in making a program to complete each task and make corrections as needed.

Class Experience

Thank you for your interest in my flex class! It will be 5 sessions over 5 weeks, meaning your child can complete each session at their own pace and time during each week. If you prefer a live class, please take a look at my live classes as well!
Coding and programming are how we communicate with technology. This flexible course is your child’s first introduction to coding and programming with the help of Botley the robot. This would make a great STEM class too. Your child can work at their own pace and easily fit into your family's schedule.

The class will follow the same format every week. Each week we will continue to build the coding skills needed to control Botley the robot, learning how to think ahead and in the language needed to program successfully to complete different challenges. The focus will be on thinking from the point of view of the robot, the importance of the right order and correct number of instructions to get the robot to where we want it to go! They will also learn about the importance of being exact when coding as one small mistake will mean the challenge will not be completed correctly. We will use the same robot every session so your child can build on previous knowledge, whether you have the robot yourself all challenges can be successfully completed.

Each session will start with a video introduction on a new skill/theme that will be posted on Sundays at 10pm Central time, some examples of some challenges being completed followed by homework in which your child will draw the challenge on the worksheet provided, write the code and send that back to me. This helps the child think through each step of the instruction in advance to make sure the robot will meet the challenge. I will then input the provided code and video the robot completing the program sent to me. I will video every attempt at a task that your child makes. If they are struggling to complete a task I can be reached via message and be happy to provide extra guidance. If they want to use their own toys or robot to complete the challenges, I can also explain what would be needed to follow along using their robot or items from around the home.

5 week flex class schedule:
Week 1: Introduction to codes/directions to move the robot.
Week 2: Collecting an item and returning.
Week 3: Collecting several items in order.
Week 4: Code your own Dance Party
Week 5: Construction Zone Challenge.

Botley is programmed in a similar way to the Beebot that many schools use in Technology class. Your child will be able to build on the skills that they are learning in school with this Botley robot.
Learning Goals
- Understand how to program a robot using a programmer
- Understanding the importance of consistent and exact codes to successfully complete challenges
- Successfully and accurately write their own codes to have the robot complete the challenge.

My name is Mrs. Thelen. I earned my Teaching degree in England back in 2002 and started teaching in England that same year and have continued ever since. I have also worked in Denmark, Oregon, Texas and Utah since then. I have a license to teach from the state of Utah and Iowa.
I have taught children ranging from 6 weeks to 10 years in private and public schools, I have taught all general subjects in this setting, mostly teaching 4–6-year-old and I love it!
I believe that children learn best when they are interested and engaged in the learning. I will be using fun ways to teach your child and every child will get a chance to participate in my small group setting.

I am going to also do a basic coding/programming class for children aged 4-8 using a small robot that the children will learn how to make it move and give me the instructions to fill challenges each time. The children will be thinking through each step to achieve the goal, all while having fun with technology.

I have carried out similar activities in school setting and feel it will benefit children online too. I have worked teaching kindergarten online for the ending period of 2020 school year when Covid hit and the whole of the school year starting 2020-21. During this period, I focused on making sure that along with regular subjects the children could still make connections with myself, and other children, and still be creative.

Some fun facts about me are that I love living in different places, I love creating things and I am also the second eldest of 9 children and have loved being with children all my life!
