***To see all of the classes I have to offer in my virtual classroom, please click copy and paste this link into your browser: https://tinyurl.com/MsdEstries This class is designed for children that have never played chess before, or are unfamiliar with the way the chess pieces move and capture. This class is not for experienced chess players. I do have a Chess for Fun class that is suited for students who already know how to play. (See link above). Every day we'll learn a new piece (or two) and practice by playing with those pieces on an interactive Google Slides document created by myself. I use a series of mini-games to help us practice that are really fun! We'll learn how the piece moves, captures, and where on the board it can be the most dangerous. The environment is relaxed and casual. There is no pressure; we are all just practicing what we've learned. Monday - The Chess Board and Pawns Pawn Battleship, Pawn Races, and a game of Pawns Tuesday - Bishops and Rooks Bishop Vs. Rook, Pawn vs. Bishop, Pawns vs. Rooks, Pawns with all 3 Wednesday - Knights Knight Tours, Pawn vs. Knights, Pawns with all 4 pieces Thursday - The Queen and King Basic Movement Queen vs. Bishop, Pawns vs. Queen, Mazes (rook, bishop, king) Friday - Check vs. Checkmate, Castling, Swapping Pawns Today we'll learn the mechanics of everything listed above and start real games of chess!
Learning Goals
Learners will have a basic understanding of where the pieces go on the board, how they move and capture, and how to play the game of chess.

During the 2019-2020 School year I was teaching 4th grade in a public school. I started a chess club there and we had such a blast together. Half of my fourth grade class ended up being in the chess club, and by the time I had to part with them in the spring, my whole class were chess players. My students would beg me to play DURING CLASS, lol, so I got to use it as a reward for jobs well-done. There is so much to love about this game, but what struck me the most was watching how it brought students together that normally you might not think would have much in common. Kids you'd never see interact with each other on the playground could connect through chess. My loudest, wildest children (who I loved very much), became peaceful and pensive. Students with insecurities gained confidence and pride in what they could do. As I' to becoming an online teacher in 2020, I was and still am all these years later, excited to still be spreading the joy of chess and everything that comes with it. It's a skill students never lose and always be proud to have.
