Description
Class Experience
In this online chess camp, campers will build their foundational skills including learning about the pieces, openings, and how to move the pieces, special moves, and the goals of opening. Students will also learn to use a digital Chessboard. A physical Chess board is not required for this class. Previous experience is not required, but we do recommend students are aware of the pieces. This class is ideal for students with chess experience (less than 10 games on ChessKid.com) Each class...
Mr. Rafael is originally from Brazil and currently lives in the U.S. He is a Psychology and Organizational Behavior graduate of the Washington University in St. Louis with a focus on Education and Memory Recall. He has tutored students ages 6-14 in many subjects, including Math, Chess, and Coding. He uses a Facilitator teaching style, focusing on student engagement and activities for the students. He is an avid Chess player ranking in the 97.5% percentile and former child tournament winner.
We recommend students spend at least 1 hour a week practicing puzzles or playing games. Practice between classes is what will help each student improve at Chess and maintain an interest in the game. You can create a ChessKid.com account at home for practice and for personal use.
Chess games must be played on a laptop or a computer. If your child has access to 2 devices they can enter the Outschool Zoom room via a tablet or smartphone, then use a laptop or computer for the digital chessboard. If your kid already has an online Chess account please keep it for your personal use. It is easier for the students to play each other if they use an account create by our teacher.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
4 hours 35 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Chess.org will be used for students to play games against the computer in addition to playing against their peers in class. An account is not required to use this tool. As an account is not required student personal identifying information is not stored in the online tool. Students wishing to keep track of their score and game history are only able to do so using ChessKid.com outside of our classroom and class time. We do not require students to have a Chess.org or ChessKid.com account. Parents with questions on how to help their child practice outside of class instruction time may look at these online tools for personal use.
