Class Experience

This beginner book study course is designed to encourage and engage early readers that are somewhat new to chapter books and book studies.
To build community and inclusion, each class will begin with greetings, a safety commitment, and a "Would You Rather" style get to know you question. I will use class time to read chapters of the book aloud, guide interactive discussion, and lead fun hands on activities to extend learning. Alongside the text I will use a variety of reading comprehension skills/strategies to promote engagement, interaction and comprehension.
It is important for me to read aloud during our class time in order to model comprehension skills/strategies, ask questions to gage listening comprehension, and introduce more complex vocabulary. Your child will be invited to follow along in his or her own copy of the book.

*Prior to the first class: Acquire your copy of The Princess in Black. You may purchase or borrow, either paper or electronic copies are suitable.

Meeting 1: Teacher reads Chapters 1-5. Pre-reading and predicting. Who has a secret in the story? Characters and setting.

Meeting 2: Teacher reads Chapters 6-10. Alliteration and ninja moves. Role playing as the Princess in Black. Compare Princess Magnolia and the Princess in Black.

Meeting 3: Come to class dressed as a newly invented superhero! Use your imagination to transform yourself and be prepared to describe your unique superhero power to the class. Teacher reads chapters 11-15.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My greatest joy in teaching is to connect with learners, meeting them where they are and helping them to build the confidence needed to grow their unique potential. Social emotional learning is at the foundation of all of my classes. I've been teaching preschool and elementary school for decades and while I continue to teach necessary and important classroom skills, I always make time to notice and value each child in our time together. A book study is a great vehicle to study characters, plot, problems, and solutions in relation to our own life stories.
