In this 4-week FLEX class, students will learn basic baking principles, how to use baking tools, what common ingredients do in recipes, and kitchen hygiene and safety, all while trying delicious recipes and developing their baking skills.

Description

Class Experience

Every week, students will need to read the recipes, watch the video lessons, answer questions, create their dish, and post a photo or video of their dish on the discussion board. Students can have fun with their photos or make a "cooking show" video describing their creations. 
The basic tools students will need are dry and liquid measuring cups, rolling pin, whisk, piping bags and tips, spatulas, wooden spoon, bowls, pot(s), baking pans (sheet, loaf, muffin, and round), cheese grater, sieve, kitchen scale, parchment paper or a baking mat, cooling rack. Helpful but not required are an oven thermometer, candy thermometer, and a hand or stand mixer (whipping cream/meringue by hand is tiring). The basic baking ingredients students will need are flour, butter, sugar, eggs, cornstarch, baking soda/powder, extracts (the only one required is vanilla but if you have lemon, mint, almond, etc., students can experiment with recipes), spices (the most used will be cinnamon but recipes may call for nutmeg, ginger, etc.), and chocolate. Students will also need oats, coconut, fruit (frozen should be fine), nuts (I will try to keep this to a minimum because I know they can be expensive), and oil-based food coloring (AmeriColor or Wilton work great. You can make almost any color with red, green, and blue so you don't need an entire set unless you would like one.) There may be occasionally be additional supplies and ingredients needed but I tried to think of everything students would need and hope it is already listed above.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
No live meetings, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be preparing dishes at home and may need to use the stove, oven, microwave, knives, and/or small appliances. Please review the recipes every week to be aware of any allergy concerns.
