👋Welcome to Class 2 of my Beginner ASL course for learners ages 9-14! Some exposure and knowledge of ASL are recommended. This is a continuation class of my Beginner ASL 1: Learn to communicate in Sign Language in 6 weeks class (8-12) class. Learners are strongly encouraged to take Beginner ASL 1 before taking this course. The link can be found here: https://outschool.com/classes/beginner-asl-1-learn-to-communicate-in-sign-language-in-6-weeks-ages-8-12-efNbKXfj Alternatively, learners can also take my 4-day summer camp https://outschool.com/classes/asl-sizzling-summer-camp-1-week-beginner-sign-language-camp-h3fdBjYi In this class, we will learn a different set of basics each week. The phrases that will be introduced will be phrases useful in everyday social situations. Each week, each learner will have ample time to learn and practice the signs. Proper finger and hand formation will accompany each new sign. Week 1: ASL greetings and ASL sentence structure/ grammar Week 2: Feelings + emotions + how to sigh "how are you? I am feeling happy" Week 3: Days of the week + months of the year + "my birthday is on ___(month + number)" Week 4: Common animals (dog, cat, bird, horse, frog) Week 5: Food and meal signs (breakfast, lunch, dinner) Week 6: Review + Games based on previous classes Through videos, demonstrations, games, participation, and hands-on learning. By the end of the course, each learner will be able to sign different ASL greetings, feelings, days of the week and months of the year, common animals, food signs, and simple sentences. It is strongly recommended learners take my Beginner ASL Class 1 before taking this class. Minimal knowledge in ASL (alphabet, colors, numbers, etc) is needed. I am looking forward to learning, laughing, and signing with your children soon!! I look forward to seeing your learner in class :) 🧠Why learn ASL? Benefits of Learning American Sign Language •Develops gross and fine motor skills •Foster early language development •Assists with letter recognition •Helps build vocabulary •Promotes better awareness and sensitivity to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community •Develops focus and concentration •Boosts self-confidence •Supports letter and word recall •Strengthen memory and problem-solving skills •Strengthen teacher/caregiver bonding •Fosters a love of learning 📓Class policy: Since ASL is a visual language each student must have their camera on during this class so that I can help them with the correct hand forms and locations, this is an essential part of learning in this course. Students will also be engaging and practicing their ASL signs and their hands must be seen for this. Additional Notes: Many signs have multiple versions, similar to regional words in English. In this class, I will teach the versions that I was taught, but you may see a different sign for the same word in classes with other teachers. While I have significant knowledge of ASL, I am a part of the hearing community and have different experiences than those of the deaf community. If you are seeking a truly immersive ASL learning experience, I highly encourage you to learn with Deaf teachers on Outschool or in your community.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I love learning and teaching ASL! I have taken 3 university-level ASL courses and love learning new signs and all about the deaf community and deaf culture. I also have a bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Studies with over 9 years of experience working with children both online and in-person from infant to high-school-age children. I strive to create engaging, personal, and interactive lessons by incorporating movement, songs, stories, games, and manipulatives into my classes and fostering a learning environment that makes learning fun for everyone!
