Class Experience

Important: Please send your Lichess.org username to me via private message before class begins. Do not share it in the class chat.

The group class is a live class and consists of a 20-minute lesson, followed by 40 minutes of online gameplay with classmates.

Why a chess lesson? Because it’s both enjoyable and rewarding to learn strategies and techniques that enhance your game. After the lesson, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your new skills by practicing and competing with your teammates in our class tournaments.

Gameplay with classmates takes place exclusively on Lichess.org, a completely free platform. To participate, you’ll need to register on Lichess.org and create a username. Once you’ve set up your account, please send your username to me in a private message. I’ll provide you with a unique team page link for our class, which will serve as our dedicated private space on Lichess.org. Being on the team allows you to join our class tournaments and gives you the option to analyze your games on your own time.

Playing chess is just as important as learning it. It’s exciting to be part of a team, compete in tournaments, and see those 1st-3rd place trophies appear on the screen.

I believe everyone will really enjoy this experience. I’ve been organizing online chess teams and tournaments for years, and I’m happy to guide anyone through the process—don’t hesitate to ask for help if needed.

Parental Guidance
My Lichess.org team pages are safe and secure, as only I can approve who joins. However, please note that your child’s username will be visible to their classmates. The main risk with any online gaming platform is the possibility of making new game friends from class. For this reason, when not in class, I recommend that children only use Lichess.org under family supervision, as it is a platform designed for chess enthusiasts of all ages, not specifically for children. That said, Lichess.org is excellent for tournaments and analyzing games your child has played. The ability to study and learn from mistakes is a key part of becoming a stronger chess player. If you’re looking for a platform where your child can play safely without guidance outside of class, I recommend ChessKid.com. It’s free (with optional paid features) and created by the reputable Chess.com. ChessKid is specifically designed for children, with limited chat options restricted to pre-set phrases like “Good Job” and a selection of emojis, ensuring a secure experience. You might wonder why we don’t use ChessKid.com for our teams and tournaments. The reason is its extra security measures: I would need to be added as an alternative guardian on every child’s ChessKid account, which can accommodate up to ten guardians. While this works well for some families, I’ve found it can often create unnecessary technical frustrations for both parents and students. To avoid these complications, I stick with Lichess.org for my online classes and tournaments.
Pre-Requisites
All learners who do not know how chess pieces move are required to take a private beginner class with me before signing up for my group class. Group Classes require learners to send me their Lichess.org username through a private message.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I’ve been teaching chess in-person for over a decade, and during the pandemic, I transitioned to online platforms as well, becoming well-versed in virtual instruction.
In addition to teaching on Outschool, I work for a reputable chess school, where I help students develop their skills, build confidence, and achieve their goals. I also assist in running rated tournaments, providing players with opportunities to challenge themselves and track their progress.
