Homework
1-2 hours per week. Learners will benefit from practicing during the rest of the week what was covered in class. Learners typically benefit from 10 minutes of practice daily. Parents can encourage this by asking them to teach them their favorite sign or phrase they learned that week. Learners can also practice by signing words when they verbally say them in conversation. I will provide an ongoing list of words and phrases covered in class.
Assessment
Informal assessment is conducted during the review time of class when going over the week prior. Things I will look for: 1. **Fluency in Basic ASL**: Students will be able to fluently express themselves using basic American Sign Language, from simple greetings and family introductions to discussing preferences, colors, and numbers by the end of the semester. 2. **Empathy and Inclusivity**: Success in the class is measured by the ability to connect with the Deaf and hard of hearing community and show empathy towards different communication needs, promoting inclusivity and understanding. 3. **Confident Communication**: A successful participant will feel confident using ASL in real-life situations, demonstrating the ability to engage in simple conversations and effectively communicate using signs, fingerspelling, and facial expressions.

This class will predominantly be students mirroring myself to learn and having basic conversations with each other to review.

American Sign Language, often abbreviated as ASL, is a vibrant and expressive visual language used primarily by the Deaf and hard of hearing communities in the United States and parts of Canada. Instead of spoken words, ASL relies on a rich vocabulary of handshapes, gestures, facial expressions, and body movements to convey meaning and communicate. It's not merely a system of signs; ASL is a fully developed language with its own grammar and syntax. ASL plays a crucial role in fostering inclusivity and enabling meaningful communication, making it an essential and beautiful language worth exploring and learning for anyone interested in connecting with this unique linguistic and cultural community.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I started learning ASL when I was 8 because I made a friend who had cochlear implants and wanted her to not feel left out at school. I have been able to utilize my gained knowledge and expand upon it throughout life and even work. Being passionate about sign language has lead me to teaching in person ASL classes to homeschoolers and now virtually here.
