Class Experience

Art journaling models healthy self-expression and teaches emotional regulation. Art journaling boosts confidence and creativity as Learner's develop new techniques for self-expression. Art journaling is a fantastic resource for Learners to use anytime they need an outlet for their emotions. That is awesome stuff!! But don't let all that awesome stuff fool you into thinking this is a serious class. This class is... (*whispers*) silly. Each class includes silly writing prompts, ridiculous drawing prompts, interactive mini games, and other bits of absurdity to inspire and boost creativity.

What, you may ask, might boost creativity? Doodling prompts such as filling up a page with fingerprints and doodling them to look like fruit with happy little faces. Writing prompts that can be taken seriously or ridiculously, such as what is the best way to wear socks? Maybe it's on your feet, but how do you know? Maybe it's on your ears. Learners can write their thoughts out inside of a sketch they just did of a sock! A creativity boosting mini-game could be 30 seconds to gather up everything light blue you can! The Learner who gathers the most light blue items in 30 seconds wins a virtual thumbs up! Each of these are examples of things you will see happen in every class! We will play with art, writing, and general silliness!

Experienced artists and beginners are welcome! There are no pre-requisites to art journaling. Just bring your fun, creative self!

Learners should bring a sketch book and drawing supplies, such as pencils, markers, pens, crayons, etc.! If anything special for the week is required then it will be listed inside the Classroom. To introduce and model new art techniques, Miss J uses a two camera system. A professional document camera will allow Learners to follow along anytime steps are explained and shown. The great thing about art journaling is there are no rules! Even when there's a step to follow there will be plenty of room for creativity and unique expression! Everyone will create something totally different and unique to them! Learners can share what they create at the end of each class. Social aspects and friendships are encouraged in class.
