Class Experience

This is a discussion class for the 1988 film Beetlejuice directed by Tim Burton. Students will receive a topic discussion handout through a link in the classroom. We will discuss the film and view a couple of short clips. In the last half of the class, students will work together as a group to retrieve the Handbook for the Recently Deceased from Otho and return it to Adam and Barbara Maitland. After all, they're going to need it!

We will talk about:
*the director and his style
*the willing suspension of disbelief
*the characters in the story
*the structure and plot of the film
*design choices in the film

After a short icebreaker (What was your favorite scene in the film and why?), we will discuss the movie. Every student will have a chance to be heard and to interact with the teacher and other students. *I reserve the right to mute anyone with excessive background noise.*

Lecture will be limited. I like to teach using the Socratic Method, which involves asking students questions so they will think critically to arrive at answers. The second half of class will be devoted to an escape room style Q&A to get the Handbook for the Recently Deceased away from Otho, who stole it to control the Maitlands. We can't let that happen . . . again!

*No prior knowledge of film terminology is required.
*Students must watch the film on their own prior to class and be prepared to answer the icebreaker question.
