What’s that Buzz? Learn how to use color in unusual ways! Just like the “Fauvist” painters: Matisse & Derain. Students will explore using color to communicate moods or feelings. Bee ready to paint!

Class Experience

No experience is needed.
Students will;
-Discover the art of Fauvist artists Henri Matisse (the Leader of the Fauves), Paul Gaugin and André Derain. The artists who painted in this style were known as ‘Les Fauves’ (the wild beasts). They believed color should be used to express the artist’s feelings about a subject, rather than simply to describe what it looks like.

-Learn how color communicates feelings:
Have you ever heard anyone say: “I’m Feeling blue.” Or the phrase “Seeing red?” Or “Green with envy”?

-Color and mood:
Earth tones= peaceful
Bright raw colors= playful
Complimentary colors= Excitement

Fauvists used wild unnatural colors! Complimentary colors are placed next to each other.

Bzzzzzzzzz! Let’s paint!!
1. Draw the bee (or use the template to trace) in pencil then outline in sharpie.
2. Using BRIGHT colors, paint the subject matter-switch colors often, use complementary colors next to each other (creates excitement).
3. For the background paint large blocks of bright colors.

*I used Inktense watercolor pencils to color first, then a brush and water to change it into a painting.

Sharing at the end!

**Class times are approximate and vary based on student ability and number of enrolled learners. Classes are designed so that they will not run longer than the time allotted.**

**Late/Missed Class Policy* All courses will begin on time as long as one learner is in the classroom. If no students are in the classroom at the assigned class time, the teacher will leave a message on the discussion board and exit after 10 min. Enrolling in class does not guarantee access to class recordings - per OutSchool's policy, they are shared at the teacher's discretion and sometimes have to remain private to ensure learner safety.**
