ย Week 1
Lesson 1
Load Your Reference Photo
In this video I will show you how to create a new screen-sized canvas, which we can use as a digital sketchbook in all of our classes together! I will also show you how to load your reference photo into Procreate, which is important to look at a lot while you draw! Download the reference photo to your IPad before beginning this lesson!
Lesson 2
Sketch Torso, Neck and Head
In this video I will show you how to see and draw the basic shapes of the torso, neck and head of our fox! We use the selection tool and transform tools to help us edit our shapes too. I will also show you how to edit the maximum size of any brush in Procreate. We will use the 6B pencil to sketch our fox.
Lesson 3
Sketch Front Legs
In this video I will show you how to see and draw the basic shapes of our fox's front legs. We'll learn how to make new layers and why layers are helpful, and we'll use more of our selection and transform tools to help us with our proportions!
Lesson 4
Sketch Back Legs and Tail
In this video I will show you how to see and draw the basic shapes of the back legs and tail of our fox! We'll use select and transform tools, talk about stylizing our drawings, use anchor points to help us measure the correct proportions, and we'll select many layers at once so we can move many objects at the same time, and we'll merge layers! So many things, I can't wait to get started let's go!
Lesson 5
Clean Up the Sketch
In this video we are going to make a new layer so we can trace over our basic shapes with more nuance details! This is where our toes and face will come alive and we'll get rid of the basic shapes we don't need anymore!
Lesson 6
Add Orange
In this video we are going to block in the orange in our fox! We practice moving layers, discuss my favorite tools inside the color picker, and learn how to create interesting textured edges! We edit another brush before using it and talk about the opacity slider for your brush, and various options for getting texture even if you don't have an Apple Pencil.
Lesson 7
Add White
In this video I will show you how to layer white into a new layer! We will learn about smudging and using clipping masks too!
Lesson 8
Add Black
In this video I will show you how to add the black to our fox! We will add some, erase some, add some again to get the kind of texture we want. We will also use a clipping mask and talk about a common issue when using clipping masks, and we'll use the Hue/Saturation/Brightness adjustment tools!
Lesson 9
Add Gray and the Face
In this video we are going to add a layer of gray to our fox's fur! We will also use black on a new layer to put our fox's face in!
Lesson 10
Add Yellow-Orange
In this video I will show you how to add some yellow-orange detail to our fox's fur! We will use a shortcut for selecting a color already on the canvas, and use our hue/saturation/brightness slider to practice finding subtle color and value changes.
Lesson 11
Finishing Touches
In this video we will add a few final touches to our fox, including finding spots where we could use more black, white and deeper reds and some gray!
  • Learn and practice Procreate tools
  • Observe the shapes, lines and color detail of a fox, and mimic those in your art
  • Students will be able to use Procreate to illustrate basic drawings after this class!
I am a full-time working artist, illustrator and author. I work from my studio everyday on a variety of projects including fine art paintings, collage and picture books! I am self-taught in fine arts after getting a degree in journalism and working in editing, graphic design and marketing for over a decade. I got into teaching kind of by accident by running workshops and classes for my community and my kids' friends and classes at school, then never stopped because I just love kids, love talking about art, and all the energy and ideas that come from being with other artists like your kids!

All my self-paced classes are chunked in small videos so that learners have natural breaks built into their learning experience.
1) IPad
(IPhone with Procreate Pocket app works exactly the same, but will look a bit different because itโ€™s compact.)
2) Apple Pencil or third-party stylus is optional, but a lot easier and more fun to use than your finger.
3) Plug it in and keep it charged! ๐Ÿ˜‰
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
In this class we use the professional digital art-making app called Procreate. This app must be used on an IPad (or IPhone as the pocket version), and can be purchased for a one-time fee of about $10 from the app store. No memberships, logins or other in-app purchases are required once you purchase your copy of the app!
