November is National Novel Writing Month. Students will learn what makes a great novel, how to outline, worldbuild, and create great characters, write the first draft of their very own novels, and discover some outlets for publishing. The class sessions will consist of a short lecture using Nearpod, individual and group activities involving writing, and time for writing novels (during the month of November). I will use such techniques as pep talks and word sprints to help students through the writing process. The last session is very laid-back and is entirely discussion-based. Week 1: Students will learn about the basics of NaNoWriMo as well as what makes a great novel. They will also brainstorm ideas for their own novels. Week 2: Students will learn about character development and create their own characters for their novels. Week 3: Students will learn about the different types of conflict. Week 4: Students will learn about plot. They will diagram their own plots. Week 5: Students will learn about setting and basics of worldbuilding. Week 6: Students will learn about dialogue. They will also have time to work on their novels. Weeks 7-9: Students will have time to work on their novels. They will be provided with resources that will help them throughout the process. Week 10: End of Novel Party! This will be a very laid-back session in which we celebrate the end of the course. Students are invited to share an excerpt from their novels.
Learning Goals
Time will be provided in class for students to work on their novels. However, in order to meet their word-count goals, students are encouraged to write throughout the week.
