Beginner - Intermediate Level
Welcome to my studio! I’m so glad you’re here! This 4-week live class is a fun, casual space where we will create a new animation together step-by-step in the app Procreate Dreams. Students will create multi-layered animations and problem-solve through the design, framing and creation of their own moving art! ✨ Each 4-week class we will make a different animation. Students can sign up again and again to get more practice and make lots of animations!! If you are familiar with my ongoing (recurring) Procreate Illustration classes, this class is similar in that it keeps going, except we spend 4 weeks on one project in one “course,” then you have to sign up again for the next 4-week course to make another animation. Please note that there are some months when we will not have class, and you are welcome to come join our recurring Procreate illustration classes to keep developing your drawing, color and other skills that are important for amazing animations! 💥 THEMES 💥 • Space and shooting stars (September) • Moths and light! (October) • East African Landscape with animals (November) • Zoomed-In Detail Movement of your choice from references (January) • Character running and jumping (February) *These months could change and shift—you will only see one month at a time to register for. ✨ We have time to share work and connect over shared interests at the beginning and end of each class! Students do not have to share and it’s never a big deal to pass. Chatting and sharing happen mostly at the beginning and end of class, with the majority of time in the middle spent on step-by-step focused work. ✨ Students following along with me step-by-step to make a new animation! More advanced students may be working at their own pace, adding more nuance, style and detail as they progress in their art-making! ✨ Students will want to (and are encouraged to!) take this class again and again, as we create something new in each 4-week class! Many students stay for years, gaining more confidence, speed and style as they work with our prompts each time! ✨For students who are not familiar with the app Procreate (the original illustration app from which Dreams spawned), and want to practice a bit before jumping into this animation class, look for my live Procreate classes or one of my self-paced classes to get started! ✨✨ I teach this class to 11-15 year olds, but if you are older than this age range you are welcome to join our class. As my schedule permits I will be creating a teen-specific class for Procreate Dreams, so follow me as a teacher for that :) If you stay in this class, over time you will be learning the following (and much more): 👉🏼 Keyframe animation 👉🏼 frame-by-frame animation 👉🏼 color theory 👉🏼 Performance Mode 👉🏼 light & shadow 👉🏼 line/shape 👉🏼 composition 👉🏼 simplifying/stylizing 👉🏼 value 👉🏼 gesture 👉🏼 sketching loose 👉🏼 mood 👉🏼 brushes 👉🏼 saving files 👉🏼 trusting instincts 👉🏼 expanding interests 👉🏼 failure=growth 👉🏼 experimenting 🏳️🌈✊🏽 ✨This is an inclusive, anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ safe space where every member can feel empowered to be themselves and create art that reflects the world they dream about! • No previous experience is necessary. Bring your ideas and an open mind! • Classes may run up to ten minutes late depending on sharing, learner questions and discussion. • Mics ON is allowed and encouraged (assuming no background noise-in which case just mute while not talking)!

Syllabus
4 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
Animation Types and Overview
In our first week together, I will show students what our theme and prompts are, give an overview of Procreate Dreams Then we will begin making a very simple animation with shapes, learning and practicing the three types of animation tools in Procreate Dreams! This will be the beginning of our wireframes, upon which we will add details later!
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Concept and Begin Creation
In our second week together, each student will decide what elements will be included in their animation, what movements they want to happen, and we will finalize their wire frame, building on what we did in the first class. If students are ready to move onto details, we will start those too!
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 3:
Build Layers, Create Groups, Learn Systems
In week three, we will continue to build our animation with many details and layers. I will show students how to group and expand layers, create and move key frames to slow or speed up movement, how to warp and transform objects, and the importance of systems to stay organized and work more efficiently!
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 4:
Finalize and Save
In week four, we will finish our animations, save them as movie files to our IPads, and share them with each other!

My classes are easy-going, mics-on spaces where we discuss and practice the process of art making, from fundamentals like line, shape, value and color, to connecting over what we love, what we struggle with, how to persevere through doubt and disappointment in our art making and ultimately learn how to trust the process and develop trust in our intuition.
I have a fun, energetic, patient, encouraging personality. I believe learning can always be fun and exciting!
I teach targeted art skills and fundamentals while building a safe social-emotional space where students can explore how to think like an artist, see like an artist and begin to be in the world as an artist!
All my digital illustration courses are guided step-by-step. My comics and animation classes are more club-style where we work on projects independently while hanging out and being social.
I am a self-taught award-winning, exhibiting, working artist. I have a degree in journalism from Temple University and I worked for years in journalism, editing, graphic design and marketing before quitting it all to become a working artist.
As an artist and writer, I have taught elementary, middle school and high school art and creative writing in classes including: drawing, painting, comics, stop motion, character design, and fundamental art principles like line, perspective, color, composition and more. I am a member of the Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators and the Art Brand Alliance. You can usually find me writing or working on a picture book dummy, creating sculptures, painting or reading!
Through guided drawing and painting, group brainstorms, games and by analyzing the books and movies we love, I will guide learners to explore and discuss a variety of storytelling principles like character development and narrative arcs, as well as art principles like gesture drawing, composition, color theory, light theory, visual storytelling and more.
If your kid is into beautiful chaos (aka being able to express themselves, find their voices, find value in collaboration and mutual support), where kids get to keep their mics ON (aka learn how to listen to others and value other opinions and perspectives), and don’t mind unpredictable outcomes (aka learn that being creative is a process not an end result when you’re learning), then maybe they’ll like my Outschool classes.
All my classes are actively anti-racist, LGBTQIA2S-celebrating, intersectionally safe spaces.
