The Gothic Era is my ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE of all time!! So be prepared for an over enthusiastic teacher and I really hope my enthusiasm will rub off!! Perfect for budding young writers who want to expand their knowledge on skills they already have or for writers who maybe need to gain more confidence in their abilities-all set in a small class environment. We will start by looking at the history of Gothic Literature and the Victorian era, when the Gothic really became popular. It seeped in to...
This class is taught in English.
Students will improve their creative writing skills, how to build tension within a story, sentence structure, spelling, punctuation and grammar. Students will then be able to apply the skills learnt in various writing exercises and tests and exams.
Non applicable to this class
There will be homework where students apply skills learnt in class - all worksheets will be provided on the class page. Students will then be asked to bring their work along to the following class and if they are happy to, share their work with the group. Or they can send me their work via message.
All extracts and any handouts will be provided that can be printed off.
Through the tasks set in class and homework, through my own observations, I will give verbal feedback to students and if parents wish I will happily provide written feedback on students performance.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
There is one short video clip we will watch from Woman in Black which is rated a 12A in the UK, there is no inappropriate content in this short clip- it will be focusing on how tension is built in the scene through setting and sounds. The extracts we will be looking at will be age range appropriate, again focusing on building tension and the literary devices used.
We will refer to some short extracts from Gothic Horror novels, where we pick out various literary devices used such as similes, metaphors etc and then discuss the impact this has on the reader.
