US Grade 1 - 4
In this 6-week course, we will meet twice a week to learn a different vowel sound! The first day of the week will be learning about the long vowel sound and the second day will be for the short vowel sound. Because the same sound can be made with multiple letter combinations, students need to master this concept to become skilled readers. I will be using a combination of reading and writing strategies that will meet each child where they are and fill any gaps they may have in their knowledge. Week 1 - vowel a Day 1: the long a sound (a_e, ai, ay, a) Day 2: the short a sound Week 2 - vowel e Day 1: the long e sound (e_e, ee, ea, ey, y, ie, e) Day 2: the short e sound Week 3 - vowel i Day 1: the long i sound (i_e, igh, y, ie, i) Day 2: the short i sound Week 4 - vowel o Day 1: the long o sound (o_e, oa, ow, o) Day 2: the short o sound (o) Week 5 - vowel u Day 1: the long u sound (u_e, ue, ew, u) Day 2: the short u sound (u) Week 6 - review week Day 1: review all long vowel sounds Day 2: review all short vowel sounds 60 Minute Class Schedule: 5 minutes: Meet and Greet! Introduction of the teacher and learners/catch up since last class. 10 minutes: Review the sound from the previous class and be introduced to the new sound. We will watch a video to better understand the sound and the different ways letters can make it. 15 minutes: Learners will work together to sort words based on what letters are making the vowel sound. Next, each learner will add their own words to the list for others to sort into the correct category. 15 minutes: Using a reading passage or selection from a book, students will go on a scavenger hunt to find all the words with the vowel sound. After finding the words through reading, we will add them to our sorted list based on the letters making the sound. 15 minutes: Learners will create and write their own short story using words with the vowel sound and share it with the class.
