Class Experience

This intermediate-level three diagraming class builds upon your Outschooler's existing diagramming skills. Together, we take a more in-depth look at the rules for diagramming appositives, infinitives, gerunds, and participles. Learning to diagram a sentence promotes critical thinking and enforces grammar skills. It also visualizes the structure of a sentence graphically, showing how words in a sentence function and relate to each other.

The level three class is a perfect next step for those with previous diagramming experience or have completed any level of Become a Diagramming Ninja class. Outschoolers will benefit the most from this class if they have a basic understanding of grammar rules (subjects, predicates, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, direct and indirect objects).

In class, we will:
✓ Build upon existing diagramming knowledge.
✓ Make logical connections between different parts of the sentence.
✓ Use critical-thinking skills to dissect sentences word-by-word
✓ Draw a picture of what language looks likes unstructured.
✓ Evaluate sentence structure as a whole and apply this knowledge.

Week One:
Appositives - A word (or phrase) that renames a noun.
Infinitives - A verb form with the word to, such as to sing or to walk.
Extra practice and review at-home activity - Let's get this diagramming down!

Week Two:
Gerunds - A verb that doesn't act like one; it acts as a noun.
Participles- They may look like a verb, but they act as an adjective.

Learning Goals

A sentence diagram is a way to represent the structure of a sentence graphically, showing how words in a sentence function and relate to each other. The process promotes critical thinking, writing, grammar, and editing skills. Kitty Burns Florey sums it up well; "When you diagram a sentence, those things are always in that relation to each other. It always makes the same kind of picture. And supposedly, it makes it easier for kids who are learning to write, learning to use correct English."

In class, we will:
✓ Build upon existing diagramming knowledge.
✓ Review basic diagraming principles.
✓ Make logical connections between different parts of the sentence.
✓ Use critical-thinking skills to dissect sentences word-by-word
✓ Draw a picture of what language looks likes unstructured.
✓ Evaluate sentence structure as a whole and apply this knowledge.

Why take on the challenge of sentence diagramming? It allows students to clarify their thinking, fix their sentences, and put grammar to use in a different way. Moving beyond basic diagramming skills helps students become better readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

My educational goal is to enable your student to become engaged in grammar. By tapping into your learner's enthusiasm, they are active and engaged in their learning process. I have taught over 4,000 Outschool students, and logged more than 800 Outschool teaching hours, in engaging, educational, and inspiring English Language courses. I am a certified Tennessee K-6th grade teacher. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in English, Communications, and Print Media.
