Class Experience

**If students have some basic knowledge of percentage, they are welcome to join this class! If students do not have any experiences with percentage, please complete the 'session one' on percentage available in my teaching page.

This is the second session on "Become a Pro Percentage Problem Solver" course. In the first session, students learnt two strategies to solve percentage problems. However, those problems were pretty basics and only ask to find percentage of a number. In this session, students will learn some shortcut methods to find 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%....95% of a number without using a calculator. The purpose of this session is to build a solid understanding on percentage and how to solve them mentally or with minimal efforts.
Topics
---------
- Discussion 1: How can we find 10% of a number without using our strategies?
- Discussion 2: What about 5% of a number?
- Discussion 3: How can we relate 10% to 5%?

Agenda
------------
A shortcut to find 10% of a number (15 mins)
------------------------------------------------------------
In this section, students will discuss the following questions
Without using our strategy, can we mentally find 10% of a number?
How can we do that?
5% of a number (15 mins)
-----------------------------------
In this section, students will discover that 5% of a number is easy to find if they know how to find 10% of a number!
What about 20%, 25%, 35% of a number? (20 mins)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
In this section, students will try to discover if there is a way to find 20% of a number without using the actual math. They will figure out that 10% is actually helpful to find 20% of a number. They will be challenged to find 35% of a number. Since, 35% is not a multiple of 10%, they may need extra time to figure it out.

Word Problems: (30 mins)
-----------------------------------
In this section, students will be given a number of percentage problems and they will need to solve them without using a calculator. They will be using mental calculation to find the answers and share their answers with others.
Discussions (10 mins)
-----------------------------
In the last 10 minutes, students will be given chance to ask questions and take some notes so that they can practice percentage problems at home.
