Class Experience

In this 1-on-1 class, we will focus on phonemic awareness and phonics skills in a fun and engaging way. In each class, the student will read a book by themselves. Before reading, the student will practice phonics rules by doing fun warm-up activities such as segmenting words, blending words, and sorting sounds. I use the Science of Reading approach. This class is taught in English.

Students will learn reading fluency through the use of proper phonics and mastery of sight words.
Students will learn to retell the story.
Students will make connections to their own lives.

I taught Language Arts for 7th and 12th grade for 2 years in a public school in the United States. I also taught ESL for 5 years.

I will send home a review sheet that is personalized for each student, which usually includes misread words from the lesson.

No supplies

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:Google Drive

The student will be informally assessed on their very first reading class just so I can choose an appropriate book to read with them.

25 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.

Let me know in advance if you want to avoid themes such as magic or anything scary. Occasionally the books will include a fight scene, dinosaurs, monsters, etc. All books are written for children and I will tell you a week in advance which book the student will read next so you can review it and make sure it's a good fit for your child.
