Class Experience

Over the course of the 4 classes in this introduction to Music Production, students will use their iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) and the application GarageBand, to build an understanding of what music production entails, and to create an original piece of music using pre-made audio loops.
The first class will give an overview of topics integral to the music production process, including terminology, demos, and listening examples. Coming back to the second class, students will have decided on a musical "mood" that they want to achieve with their project. We will cover a more in-depth look at skills regarding GarageBand, how to achieve a musical mood, and a production project will be assigned. The third class will provide each student an opportunity to share their first draft of their produced song, and a discussion on how to take their song-craft to the next level. The fourth and final class will allow students to share their final and revised song, and a discussion on pathways and opportunities in music production will conclude the course.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the creative, technical, and compositional skills necessary to produce a song within GarageBand. Students will understand how to control musical mood, flow, and energy in their song with the knowledge acquired to achieve their goal for a specifically chosen mood or "vibe".

Parental Guidance

This class requires a parent to download the free Garageband app (rated for age 6 and up) from the iOS app store on the device the learner will use for this class.

Apps necessary:
-GarageBand

Headphones (or external speaker) strongly recommended! It's very hard to make music coming out of a phone speaker, though not entirely impossible.

Please ensure the device's software is updated to at least iOS 10.1

My name is Ray G, and I’m excited to be your new music instructor! I’m here to show young learners that there is room for music in their busy lives whether they have some experience, or no experience at all in the creative practice of music. I have been an active member of the music community in Toronto, Canada for quite a few years, and in 2021, completed my Bachelor’s degree in Music, where I studied guitar, composition, production, and performance. I have lots of experience on stage and in the studio, and I’ve worked as a producer and engineer in a professional capacity on many occasions.

Over the past five years, I’ve taught many aspiring musicians, songwriters, and beginner producers, and I’ve found Outschool to be a great tool to bring my lessons to learners all over the world. Topics I like to cover with my classes are guitar and ukulele basics, songwriting workshops, D-I-Y music production in Garageband, and music theory foundations. In teaching these topics, I’ve found that with an open mind and the right tools at your disposal, any young person can begin to unlock their creative potential and start a lifelong relationship with music. I hope to give learners a meaningful connection to what music has to offer at all levels, and I want to create a safe online space to nurture creativity and freedom, while also providing structure in each lesson with a step-by-step approach to any and every topic. Along with recorded classroom meetings, you’ll have access to all the class coverage in digestible PDF documents, assignments, and exercises to accompany the classroom lessons.
