What's included
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework will be optional, as this class is designed to help students gain understanding of basic chemistry concepts.Assessment
An optional assessment will be given each week for students to gauge understanding of each week's concepts.Class Experience
US Grade 9 - 12
This class is a great precursor for students either about to begin a high school chemistry class, or currently in a chemistry class and struggling with the basics. Nearpod and Flipgrid will be utilized during this course, and each week a new lesson will be uploaded, along with a note sheet the students can print to follow along with, and an assignment to practice what they've learned. Lessons will be include videos, polls, a collaboration activity for students to share ideas, articles for students to read and refer to, open-ended questions, and lots of pictures! Students will be given links and access codes to take assessments and do practice on Quizziz, a free website (does not require a log in) allows the students to receive instant feedback on any work submitted. I will be able to view scores and see which questions the students answered incorrectly. This will allow me to further assist my students in an individual way. Further assistance could include scheduling a Zoom meeting through Outschool, emails between myself and the student, or uploading the content being explained in different ways. Each week, the students will be given the option to complete graded assignments and graded assessments to gauge comprehension of the class content. Please see below for an outline of the schedule: Week 1: Significant figures, the importance of the precision of measurements, using the metric system, conversions within the metric system, and using dimensional analysis. Week 2: Atomic theories leading to the current model used today, sub-atomic particles, determining atom identification based on proton number, atomic mass, and isotopes. Week 3: Periodic trends, ions, electron configuration, mixtures, compounds, and states of matter. Week 4: Nuclear chemistry, fusion, fission, and radioactive decay.
Learning Goals
Students will be given a strong foundation for any high school chemistry course. The topics covered in this course are the basics that will be added on to throughout the remainder of the year in any chemistry course.
