Class Experience

This class is for young learners who already have a significant formal chess background, likely including having taken multiple previous classes. All learners are expected to already be comfortable with all of the foundational rules of chess, up to and including en passant capturing and stalemate, and also have a prerequisite knowledge of multiple checkmate strategies including the Scholar’s Mate (The “Four Move Checkmate”).

Throughout the semester we will review historic games of famous chess Masters and Grandmasters, analyze the strategies employed, and learn how and when to replicate them, including some variations. Each week's lesson starts with about 30 minutes of explanation and discussion, followed by, for the remaining duration of each class, virtual chess games between the classmates, supervised by the instructor.

Schedule of Lessons (first 30 minutes of each class):
Week 1: Game Analysis: The Opera Game, Part 1
Week 2: Game Analysis: The Opera Game, Part 2
Week 3: The Sicilian Defense (and Variations)

Week 6: Commonly Played Openings, Part 3: The French Defense & Caro-Kann
Week 7: Game Analysis: Carlsen vs. Karjaken

Parental Guidance
This class uses the external website ChessKid to facilitate online chess games between classmates. ChessKid is 100% committed to safety, and meets Outschool's standards for Safety and Privacy ONLY FOR LEARNERS AGE 13 AND OLDER. If you are enrolling your child in this class, you are identifying your child as age 13 or older, and Central NY Chess will take no further steps to confirm your child's age. If your child does not already have a ChessKid account, we will create one for them, and can provide parental administrative access to that account at any time upon your request. For more information, contact us before enrolling, or see: https://www.chesskid.com/legal
Supply List
We organize all of our virtual chess games on ChessKid.com; each student, during their enrollment in this class, will be provided by us a Gold Membership to ChessKid (a $20 value). We believe that this is the safest and most comprehensive learning tool we can use to facilitate our in-class virtual games. Students are encouraged (but not required) to use this website for any practice games that they play outside of class also, so that their progress can be tracked and included in the Report Cards provided to parents; this would also assist our instructors in identifying how best to coach each student on concepts that they may be struggling with. After the end of the semester, students not continuing into one of our more advanced courses will still have limited access to ChessKid to play virtual games at their leisure, but their archived game history will eventually disappear.
