This class is for young learners who can already play chess strategically, but are not quite ready for the world of deep analysis and memorizing tactical lines that they would find in our Advanced level courses (and beyond). Instead, this course is a great followup course to take after finishing one of our "Become a Chess Pro: Intermediate Lessons..." courses. Some of the lessons include taking a deeper look at the strategies discussed in the previous courses, while other lessons introduce brand new topics altogether. Each week's lesson starts with about 30 minutes of explanation and discussion, followed by, for the remaining duration of each class, virtual chess games between the classmates, supervised by the instructor. Schedule of Lessons (first 30 minutes of each class): Week 1: Points of Failure on the Board Week 2: Shifting Centers & Attacking Castled Positions Week 3: Pattern Recognition Week 4: Open & Closed Positions Week 5: King & Pawn Endgames Week 6: Forcing Stalemate, Perpetual Check, & Draw by Repetition Week 7: The Double Bishop Checkmate Week 8: Conclusion: Review, Chess Puzzles, and more! Schedule of Virtual Games (final 30 minutes of each class): Week 1: Practice Games with instructor coaching Week 2: Practice Games with instructor coaching Week 3: Practice Games with instructor coaching Week 4: Practice Games with instructor coaching Week 5: In-class tournament Round 1 games Week 6: In-class tournament Round 2 games Week 7: In-class tournament Round 3 games Week 8: Awards Ceremony (all students will be sent certificates of completion and tournament award ribbons)
Learning Goals
By the end of this course, students will have a thorough foundational understanding of the game of chess, how to plan ahead, and how to win against their peers. They will also leave with a basic understanding of how competitive chess tournaments are structured, and will feel prepared to compete against peers of their age and skill levels.
