Have you ever moved to a new place where you didn't yet know anyone or have any friends? Can a pet really change your life and bring a community together? Can you find "family" anywhere? In this class, we're going to discuss Because of Winn-Dixie, the award winning book by Kate DiCamillo, and the 2005 movie adaptation. During the first three classes, we'll talk about the plot, themes of the story (friendship, family, loneliness, loss, communication, courage, etc.), and literary elements...
Students will be introduced to an award-winning work of literature and hopefully come to appreciate it more through the discussion and literary study of the book.
Before each class, learners will be asked to read several chapters so that they'll be prepared to participate in the class discussion. Depending on the learner's reading speed, approximately 2 hours of reading will likely be necessary between classes in order to keep up with the class.
Students will need to acquire a copy of the book Because of Winn-Dixie (by Kate DiCamillo). It can be checked out from a local public library or purchased affordably in either print or e-book format on sites such as Amazon.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
