During the next five weeks, we will take explore Naomi, Florida with India Opal Buloni and her dog, Winn-Dixie. Learners will read and discuss "Because of Winn Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo. This chapter book will help learners explore deep and meaningful themes and take away valuable life lessons. The first half of the class will be a read aloud, and in the second half of the class we will discuss what we have read. Learners will improve their vocabulary. Learners will improve reading comprehension through visualization, making connections, and exploring themes. Learners will ask and answer questions and practice speaking and listening. Learners will use critical thinking skills to solve puzzles in a digital escape room.
Homework Offered
Optional projects will need to be completed between classes. After Class Project Week 1, bring to our second meeting to share: Create your own "Ten Things About Me" List comic strip. Draw and write to share ten things that make you unique! After Class Project Week 2, bring to our third meeting to share: Pretend you are at Gertrude's Pets. Which pet would you chose to take home? Draw and write about which pet you would like and how you care for that pet. After Class Project Week 3, bring to our fourth meeting to share: Design and create your favorite scene from the book! After Class Project Week 4, Candy Invention. Create and design a poster that advertises a candy that you are going to invent! If learners would prefer to draw their projects instead of build them, they are welcome to!Assessments Offered
