Optional projects will need to be completed between classes. After Class Project Week 1, bring to our second meeting to share: Create your own "Ten Things About Me" List comic strip. Draw and write to share ten things that make you unique! After Class Project Week 2, bring to our third meeting to share: Pretend you are at Gertrude's Pets. Which pet would you chose to take home? Draw and write about which pet you would like and how you care for that pet. After Class Project Week 3, bring to our fourth meeting to share: Design and create your favorite scene from the book! After Class Project Week 4, Candy Invention. Create and design a poster that advertises a candy that you are going to invent! If learners would prefer to draw their projects instead of build them, they are welcome to!Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
During the next five weeks, we will take explore Naomi, Florida with India Opal Buloni and her dog, Winn-Dixie. Learners will read and discuss "Because of Winn Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo. This chapter book will help learners explore deep and meaningful themes and take away valuable life lessons. The first half of the class will be a read aloud, and in the second half of the class we will discuss what we have read. Learners will talk about visualization, theme, and connections that they make to the story. Learners are encouraged to think deeply. This story will build learners vocabulary and world view. Themes such as moving and making new friends will be explored and learners will be encouraged to share any connections that they have to the text. I will do an engaging read aloud with dramatic voices, and lead a discussion. Learners will be encouraged to ask and answer questions. This book has deep themes and does contain the main character coming to terms with her mother abandoning her. I provide optional projects for enrichment. They are not required in the class. Week 1 - Chapters 1-5 - After Class Project: Create your own "Ten Things About Me" List comic strip. Draw and write to share ten things that make you unique! Week 2 - Chapters 6-10 - After Class Project: Pretend you are at Gertrude's Pets. Which pet would you chose to take home? Draw and write about which pet you would like and how you care for that pet. Week 3 - Chapters 11-14 - After Class Project: Design and create your favorite scene from the book! Week 4 - Chapters 15-19 - After Class Project: Candy Invention. Create and design a poster that advertises a candy that you are going to invent! Week 5 - Chapters 20-27 and a Digital Escape Room: No Project. An optional Blooket will be provided so learners can answer questions about the book.

I think it is important to make learning a personal experience for each learner. I encourage each student to share their thinking. I work create a space where learners feel comfortable to learn. In order for every child to flourish they need to be seen, heard, and loved.
I believe in building relationships with my students and making learning engaging and connected to their lives. I use a multi-sensory approach to learning. I incorporate multiple domains throughout my lessons. I love to have fun in the classroom through conversations, games, and hands-on learning.
I have a Bachelor's of Science and a Master of Arts in Education. I have my TEFL and TESOL certifications. For the past 14 years, I have taught every grade from PreK-4th grade, sponsored a 3rd-5th grade STREAM club and a K-5 book club. I have also taught English online since 2019.
I have a 21 year old daughter, a 7 year old son, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and an axolotl. In my spare time, I love to read, play card and board games, hike, and watch movies. We love to travel and explore, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination!Reviews
