Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
We'll discussing the book, Because of the Rabbit, by Cynthia Lord. The class will be run like a book club so there is a minimum enrollment. There will be an assigned amount to read each day and then a discussion of characters, themes, lessons learned, delving into some "predictive" learning at the end of the first two sessions.

As students read about the narrator, Emma, they will not only learn about her and the characters in her life, the plot, and themes of the book, but they will also gain an understanding of caring for rabbits and the struggles she has in going from homeschooling to public schooling.

Below is a rough breakdown of what we will cover over the course of the class:

Day 1: Students will have already read up to page 65 prior to class.
Before we begin discussion of the story, we'll get a little background information on Maine and working as a game warden, as well as homeschooling and rabbit rescue, and we'll play "Two Truths and a Lie."
--Discussion
--Prediction: How is Emma feeling at the end of this section? What do you think of her friendship with Jack?

Day 2: Students will have already read pages 66-130 prior to class.
--Discussion
--How is Emma changing?
--Prediction: Will Lapi bring "rabbit magic" like Emma hopes?

Day 3: Students will have already read pages 131-183 prior to class.
--Discuss the end of the book.
--Go back to the prediction from week 1 and discuss it in relation to the end book. How is Emma feeling about Jack by the end of the book?
--What did Emma learn about herself and the different modes of learning?

I LOVE this book! It pairs my very favorite things: rabbits and learning -- whether at home or in public school. It also offers some honest feelings about friendship and being included. I have moved around a lot (been the "new kid") since I was a child, raised rabbits for 40 years, and homeschooled my three kids, so the subject was close to my heart. And I love books, reading, and discussing literature, in general. Students will be introduced to some of my pet rabbits during each session.
