Kids who struggle with keeping things neat, tidy and organized don't always find the encouragement or support as kids who struggle academically. Think of this class as tutoring for kids who need extra help getting and keeping things tidy! This group will be a judgement free zone. I was the kid who had a messy room and a messy desk. I know how frustrating it can be to just not be naturally tidy. So, with empathy and kindness (and humour and fun too), I teach a simple and consistent process for getting bedrooms under control - which with practice can be reproduced independently. Learners will be encouraged, supported and coached as they make actual progress in real time during our classes. Each session will be 40 minutes in length and include approximately 10 minutes of teaching, and 30 minutes of hands-on coached cleaning, decluttering and organizing. Learners will gain skills and confidence to break down the tasks necessary to keep their room neat and tidy, and have fun along the way. Each session will stand alone - learners can enter this course easily at any point as we will begin every class reviewing the steps and getting right to work! Learners will make improvements on their personal spaces every time they come. Guaranteed! Topics for our conversations will vary week to week with a rotation of our main themes between tidying, decluttering, and organizing. Each learner will be encouraged to identify the most pressing need in their own space and be coached through making improvements. As we rotate through our main themes, there will be flexibility to adapt based on learners needs to ensure it is as helpful, fun and productive as possible for each and every learner.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to break down overwhelming tasks into manageable pieces, and make immediate progress in getting any messy space clean.
Other Details
Supply List
Learners will need a garbage bag, and a spot to put their recyclables (bag, bin, box etc). We will also discuss donation/handing items down and we will chose items to declutter (with parent permission). Students should have a box or bag available for those items they intend to declutter. Students may also choose to play their own music while working in their own space, but I will not use a group playlist as that has proven distracting to some students in the past. If a student plans to have music on in their own space, they should have a playlist or CD ready so that they are not spending class time figuring out what music to listen to!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a teacher, a tutor and a mom from British Columbia, Canada. I currently am teaching full time in the public school system and enjoy tutoring and coaching part-time on Outschool as well.
As a child academics came very easily for me, but personal organization did not. I was the kind of kid who had a messy room and a messy desk, and later a messy locker, apartment and car! Kids who struggle with math or writing, often get support. Kids who struggle with life skills instead tend to get judged and treated like they are just lazy or don't care. I cared and my inability to figure out how to keep things tidy was frustrating, stressful and embarrassing!
I have studied and learned ways to work with my brain to get and keep things clean and organized. I love working with kids and teens who need a little extra encouragement, support and training in this area - and offer judgement-free, kindness based coaching for kids.
I really hope to get to meet and work with your children.
