Class Experience

Unconventional, challenging math for curious kids! This is a fun math class at Grade 3-4 level (or 8-10 years old) based on the highly-acclaimed Beast Academy curriculum by the Art of Problem Solving (AoPS). In this session, we'll focus on measurement - length, weight, and volume. You'll also learn tricks to memorize conversion.

Learning math is more than memorizing formulas or doing lots of simple activities without real understanding. In this class, we'll also learn to solve problems in a smart way with inspiring, fun, and unconventional challenges. Our problems and puzzles offer clever mathematical insights, and will teach higher-order, outside-the-box reasoning skills while reinforcing fundamentals.

Most of the content and problems will be from Beast Academy and AoPS which were founded by Richard Ruscyzk (Princeton grad and USA Math Olympiad Winner). The course will be quite rigorous but in a fun and loving environment.

My curriculum has successfully prepared young students to not only love mathematics but also get top scores in the International Math Contest USA and placed in top 15 positions in the Math Kangaroo USA competition.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I’m an award-winning engineer with graduate degrees from Stanford University and Cambridge University and have worked in tech and education in the Silicon Valley for 15 years. I also have an educational certificate from Harvard. After a successful career in research and technology, I switched to education full-time, running the Palo Alto Math Circle, assisting at the Stanford Math Circle, and homeschooling our two children who are Davidson Young Scholars. My other interests are traveling, yoga, meditation, and spending time with my family. :)

My goal is to nurture a lifelong love of mathematics, logical & flexible thinking, creative problem-solving, and meaningful learning, in a loving, joyful environment. We do intriguing, inspiring, fun math to encourage a sense of discovery and excitement about mathematics through problem solving and interactive discussions.

Our Joy of Math approach is grounded in research and supported by true mathematicians and computer scientists from Stanford, MIT, and Google.

My family has enjoyed math so much that many members have won math/CS contests such as a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and Google Best Gadget Awards, as well as pursued PhD studies in applied mathematics. We're so happy to share our love of mathematics with the next generation of young mathematicians!
