Learners should already know letter identification/sounds and working on their reading skills. These classes will help the reader use strategies to figure out difficult words within the text, that are not sight words. 

We will learn and practice a new reading decoding strategy each class. I will use the beanie babies strategies to teach each lesson.
 1. Eagle Eye : This lesson will help the learner to look at the pictures and the sound of the first letter. With clues from each they will be able to decode the word. Beginner level texts often have pictures that can help with difficult words within the text. 

2. Chunky Monkey: This lesson will help the learner chunk the unknown word into parts and then combine them. Many times learners will skip longer words, when in fact they know parts of the words. 

3. Skippy the Frog: This lesson will help the reader practice skipping the word and reading the text that followings, but then using clues from that text to come back to the unknown word. Young readers often get stuck on a word they do not know and will not move on or skip the word and never come back to it. 

4. Flippy the Dolphin: This lesson will work on flipping the vowel sound in the unknown word. Most young readers immediately use the short vowel sound and forget that the vowel could make another sound and form a word that they actually know.
