How are beach sands created? Where is the whitest beach in the world? How many different colors of beach sediment exist? What gives beaches their color? Answering these questions will guide our class activities and discussion. This class is part of a series on beaches which includes: Marine Biology Basics: Beachcombing Biology and Beaches: Structure and Formation. Learners will engage with content though a combination of muli-media presentation, teacher demonstrations and whole-class discussion. Learners will be guided through a demonstration on sediment (sand) identification, explore latitude and longitude of colored beaches using Google Earth and unique landmarks of each beach. Places we will explore include: Hawaii, Australia, Indonesia, Iceland, California and Malta
Learning Goals
Upon completion of this class, learners will be able to:
-identify and locate famous beaches of the world.
-describe latitude and longitude and how that relates to geography.
-categorize types of beaches based on sediment and formation.
-identify a beaches primary sediment composition.
