Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
📝Let's become better writers!📝
In this 8-week, narrative writing class, we will go through each step of the writing process for writing a creative narrative story catering to each learner's interests (Be You!).

Each week, there will be a lesson that will cover a specific part of the story writing process. Lessons will be given via Google slide presentation and include continual class participation. They will be given examples to help them craft the part of their story for that lesson. Learners will have time at the end of each class to start on their assignment. Writing assignments will be completed on a personal Google slide link the learner will receive before the course begins that the learner will type on or print out to handwrite. They will need to complete the assignment before the next class and will receive written feedback on the assignment at the end of the following class.

📈Week 1: Types of Writing and Story Plot📈
Learners will be introduced to the different types of writing and learn how to create a story plot together. They will begin brainstorming ideas for their own story by creating their story plot.

🏁Week 2: Story Beginnings🏁
Learners will learn the different ways to write an entertaining beginning that draws the reader in and practice together using examples. They will begin working on the story beginning for their own story.

🍦Week 3: Descriptive Detail🍦
Learners will learn how to use descriptive detail in their writing to allow the reader to experience what the characters are experiencing. They will practice together using examples, then begin creating a descriptive paragraph for a character, setting, or object in their story.

😲Week 4: Building Suspense😲
Learners will learn how to build suspense in their writing to keep the reader engaged. They will practice together using examples, then write a paragraph using suspense-building techniques for their story.

💥Week 5: Establishing a Main Event/Climax💥
Learners will learn how to incorporate description, dialogue, thoughts, and feelings into their writing and "show" instead of "tell" their main event or climax. They will practice together using examples and use these skills to write the main event in their story.

🎬Week 6: Story Endings🎬
Learners will learn how to create strong endings that leave the reader satisfied with their story. They will practice together using examples, then write a paragraph to use as the end of their story.

🛠️Week 7: Revising and Editing🛠️
Learners will learn how to properly revise and edit together using practice passages. Learners will put their stories together in order and add any other events that are missing.

📖Week 8: Storybook📖
Learners will be given a tutorial on how to create a digital storybook of their story. Learners will begin working on their storybook covers while the teacher reviews their final drafts and helps add their story to the book. Learners will share book covers with the class and give a summary sneak peek of their story. After class, learners will complete the storybook for their story, which will be viewable to their peers who have also taken the class. These books can be printed into hard copies if desired.
🎖️Each learner will receive a certificate of completion upon completing the final draft and storybook cover.
