In this one time class, students will learn about racism, anti-racism, and the importance of having kindness and empathy for others. We will also explore ways students can use their voices to stand up against racism.

Class experience

Students will increase their understanding about racism and anti-racism. They will also explore ways they can use kindness and their voices to stand up to racism.
I love learning about history and its effects on the world. I have a B.A. from Columbia University in History. I also have over 10 years of experience teaching African American History to students in Kindergarten to 8th grade. I would love to have the opportunity to share my love of history with your child.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Dear Parents,

Please be aware that this class will cover the sensitive topic of racism against others based on skin color. This class will not focus on the origin of racism in America, or details of the Civil Rights Movement and the current Black Lives Matter Movement. However, we will review the definition of race, racism, discrimination, and anti-racism . Students will also listen to a few short stories that enable them to identify what racism looks like in everyday life. Then, we’ll brainstorm ways to “be the rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” Empathy and rejection of intentional or unintentional racist behavior defeats discrimination. Students will be encouraged to participate and share their opinions. I will guide the conversation. The ultimate goal is to make children aware that all people should be treated fairly, and that discrimination is never acceptable.

Sincerely,
Teacher Jameelah
