In this one time course, we will work together to complete a STEAM project! We will read “Rosie Revere, Engineer” by Andrea Beaty. The kids will also write/sketch a plan of a playground they could design themselves if given the opportunity
Class experience
The students will learn by using their imagination and critical thinking skills to design their playgrounds. While I read the book, the kids will be asked to share different connections to their own lives. At the end of the story, I will ask different comprehension questions relating to the characters, conflict and main idea. The students will learn the amount of hard work, perseverance and dedication it takes to be an engineer in real life.
I love teaching science! I have facilitated this STEAM project a dozen times with many different age groups. It’s incredible to see what children can create when they are given the opportunity and means to use their “creative brains!”
The teacher will provide the book. Here is a list of supplies the students will need: 1) glue 2) duct tape 3) 7 sheets of construction paper 4) one sheet of plain white or notebook paper 5) a pencil 6) markers, crayons or colored pencils 7) scissors 8) pipe cleaners, string Pom poms and popsicle sticks (optional)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Children will be using scissors for this activity
