In this two day, half hour class, students will learn how to collect data about butterflies to help researchers as citizen scientists.
Class Experience
In this class, learners will be invited to join the Citizen Scientist movement by collecting some data about butterflies they see in their own backyards. On Day one, the teacher will share data collected about butterfly sightings in her own back yard. From this presentation, students will learn to collect data in a tally chart, analyze data and create a bar graph with data. Students will learn how they can participate as Citizen Scientists. Students will learn to create a tally chart and graph using their data. Students will present their data to the learning group. Students will participate in class discussions comparing butterfly data from different places.
As a teacher with more than 25 years experience, I have helped students become excited and engaged in their own learning interests.

The idea for this class came from an article in Birds & Blooms magazine about the Citizen Scientist movement. There are thousands of everyday people around the world participating in Citizen Scientist projects to help researchers collect data. Also, the website e-butterfly.org has opportunities for citizen scientists to contribute data for research.
