In this ongoing class, students will learn about people who have survived in situations where one would not dream it to be possible. These individuals were able to survive of their knowledge of their environment, their level of preparation, confidence, problem-solving abilities and ability to adapt to their situation. Stories include sailors whose boats have sunk, like one man who survived for 76 days on a life raft in the Pacific Ocean, as well as mountain climbers who became lost and...
Students will learn about different survival stories, the methods that the survivors used to stay alive (even if people get lost in their cars in winter conditions), and at same time, learn about some of the sports and activities and expand their understanding of the people who push themselves to test themselves and take risks. However, I will be very careful to explain that activities such as those we discuss are not to be tried by beginners and without experts or guides.
I have been on multiple "adventures" such as horseback riding in mountains, backpacking in back country locations, and trekking alone in the mountains of Nepal. I have been inspired for my entire life by stories of heroism, bravery, compassion and persistence against all odds. I love to share my knowledge, passion and enthusiasm and to hopefully inspire students to challenge themselves in safe activities and only after acquiring necessary skills.
No homework required.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Parents should understand that stories of survival, while not graphic or focusing on physical suffering of survivors, do contain discussion of general hardships.
