Description
Class Experience
Using the mechanics of D&D 5E students enter the Flavian Amphitheater (Roman Colosseum) and give battle in this fully immersive Roman Empire setting coupled with exciting side adventures and mysteries to solve. Each student will take on a Human Player Character (PC) who has a special student-generated background explaining how and why they have become gladiators. Students vicariously experience life as a gladiator in the Roman Empire. Students learn about city life in Rome. Students learn about traveling through the Roman Empire visiting other provinces and will encounter many other gladiators from the far reaching empire. Students learn about how the Imperial government works. Students will become acquainted with historical events which occurred during their timeline in the class.
As a teacher of Ancient History for the past thirty years, I am very excited to offer this historically based D&D Immersion class. This immersion technique is especially effective in allowing students to gain a much richer understanding of the time period than merely reading about it; rather they are part of the story and in most cases the authors of the adventure.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This is a class based upon gladiatorial combat during the Roman Imperial period, thus there will be fantasy combat as per the rules of D&D 5E. In the spirt of all role-playing games - the tenets of adventuring will be promoted, thus exploration of the city of Rome and its provinces and social interaction with its citizens will be a main part of this class beyond combat in the arena. Roll20 is a Virtual Table Top (VTT) which allows me as Game Master/Dungeon Master to create a world for the students, the (Player Characters/PCs) to interact with each other and for the PCs to interact with me as the Non-Playing Characters in the various scenarios in the Roman Empire setting I have developed for this class. We use only Zoom and the camera/audio features should be turned off (and must because of audio feedback). Our game is a private game thus no one else is invited to our Gladiator game for that section of students.
