US Grade 7 - 10
The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continual conflict of WW2. This 5-session course looks at the challenge of sending troops and supplies to Europe, how the Germans sought to stop that shipping, and how the Allies confronted the U-Boats and other German threats. The course is structured sequentially, from the key events prior to the start of WW2 through the progression of events to the ultimate end of WW2. Session #1--Prelude and early skirmishes: Germany's doctrine and focus for the Kriegsmarine, the initial U-Boats, Italy and France, ASIDC, and the criticality of supplies from North America. Session #2--The Happy Time: lend lease, wolfpack tactics, U-boat dominance, Graf Spee and Bismarck, Sea Hurricanes, Hedgehog, Squid, . Session #3--Operation Drumbeat: US entry in the war, evolution of protection, the Black Pit, measures and countermeasures, and German aircraft. Session #4--Black May-the Turning Point: Bletchley Park and Enigma Machines, tactical changes, pulling U-Boats from the Atlantic, U-Boats in the Mediterranean. Session #5--End Game: the last U-Boats, carriers in the Atlantic, casualties, life in a U-Boat, search and rescue. This class is very interactive. I usual a lot of pictures, maps, diagrams, and visual aids. I ask questions of learners and encourage comments. It is useful for learners to have some background information on WW2.
