If you already have a beginner-intermediate foundation of baton twirling skills, this class is for you! If you are looking for a beginning class, please see my listing for Baton Twirling 101. In this beginner-intermediate 6 week-class, students will continue to learn and polish baton twirling while developing hand-eye coordination and wrist flexibility. Twirling helps to develop spatial awareness (left, right, up, down, front, back) as well as fine motor skills. Kids love this 30 minute class and they especially love the glow-in-the-dark twirling party during the last class! Twirlers will add and build on their Baton Twirling 102 skills by adding these new skills and tricks: Two Handed Spin with Hand Roll Reverse Elbow Roll Elbow Extension Elbow Retraction Elbow Rocks Double Elbow Roll Elbow Pops Helicopter Flourish Combinations Back Hand Flip Open Hand Flip Open Hand Back Hand Flip Spins Twirlers will already know how to do and in class we will continue to polish their: Horizontal Flat Spins Forward Figure Eights Reverse Figure Eights Finger Twirls-Vertical (Grapevine) Twirls Two-Hand-Spin Two-Hand-Spin Pass Around Back Flourish - Forward and Reverse Thumb (Vertical) Toss (Flip) Double Flat Twirl and Horizontal Toss Slides Around the World Hand Roll Arm Roll Elbow Roll Spins To teach a skill, I will demonstrate the skill first, so students can see what the skill and movements look like. I will slow my movements down and describe each movement. After demonstrating and giving detailed instructions, students will have time to begin practicing the skill themselves. We will go slowly through the new movements at first, then increase the speed of the skill as the muscle memory develops. I will provide feedback and additional instruction as needed. Students will learn each skill with their dominate hand and with their non-dominate hand. Practicing skills for 10 - 20 minutes between classes at least 2 - 3 different times will make for a more enjoyable learning experience. Baton dropping in class and during practice will happen, no worries!! Building muscle memory takes time and practice. Practice makes better! Student will need a baton with a weighted end. I recommend a baton in the $20-35 range with a 3/8" metal shaft and the length should be based on your child's size. You can find your child’s size by having them reach their arm straight out to the side then measuring from under their armpit to their longest outstretched finger- usually the middle finger. Once you've got this number add one inch for the perfect size. Or add two inches if you want to allow for your student's growth, but it can be a bit harder to manipulate. That being said, having a baton that is a little too small or a little too big is absolutely fine for this introductory course.
Learning Goals
Learners will advance their foundational skills and twirl the baton as well as move, toss and spin at the same time by the end of the week.

Parental Guidance
In order to have a safe twirling space, please locate a place in your home with about 5-10ft of open space for your student to twirl. Also please make sure that furniture is moved ahead of time if needed, and that there are no cords or any other tripping hazards in the dance area. Your student should be prepared for twirling before class starts by having the device set in a good spot that will allow me to see the twirler's body from head to knees so that I can provide feedback on movements, come dressed in comfortable clothes, have their baton and have a water bottle nearby.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Psychology from John K Kennedy University
I was a baton twirler from 7th - 11th grade. After seeing fire spinners at a festival a few years ago, I remembered how fun it is to twirl so I picked up spinning baton again, and added staff spinning. I now spin fire at festivals as well. I look forward to teaching kids the fundamentals of twirling a baton. Twirling can be a life-long enjoyable sport and pastime that also adds flexibility and coordination to the whole body.
