Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
Intermediate Level
Students will build on their experience in Part I of the Bastien Level 3 method books in this class. They will continue to work on songs with intervals, songs with root, first and second inversions and pieces that move the hand position.

Week 1: 8th (octave); p. 28 - exercises on harmonic intervals; p. 29: The Can Can
P. 30 - Viennese Waltz (Waltz bass)
Week 2: German Folk Song (waltz bass); p. 33 - The Stars and Stripes Forever
Week 3: The Chromatic Scale - p. 34; p. 35 - Storm at Midnight
Entry of the Gladiators - binary or two part form - p. 36 and 37
Week 4: The Order of Flats - p. 38; Group 3 Keys (D-flat, A-flat and E-flat)
Week 5: D-flat Major Scale - p. 40; Latin Serenade - p. 41
Week 6: Prelude in D-flat Major - p. 43
Week 7: p. 44 - A-flat Major Scale; p. 45 - Three-Quarter Time
Week 8: p. 46 - Red River Valley: p. 47: Swingin’ Rhythms
Week 9 - . 48 - E-flat Major Scale; p. 50 - Song of Spring; p. 51 - Aria
Week 10 - p. 49 - Evening Hymn; p. 50 - Song of Spring; Aria and Fur Elise - the last lesson will focus on finishing the Piano book.

My class is structured in the following way: 1) review of assigned material, 2) learning new materials in the Piano, Performance, Theory and Technic books and 3) may also include subjects like sight reading, solfeggio, composition and musical games. By the end of this book, students should be familiar with Group Three keys as well as proficient in keys listed in Level 2. Students should be at an early intermediate level to take this class and familiar with songs that use hand shifts on a frequent basis. They may come to this class from a different method, but it is best if they use the other Bastien levels before taking this class.

Learning Goals

Students will learn Group Three Keys - scales and arpeggios and songs in those keys as well as continue with technique and theory.
