Class Experience

In this class, students will learn how to pick up a sheet of music and understand some of the vocabulary that their choir teacher, vocal director, or peer musician might use. They will learn how to follow along on the music, the basics of how to read types of music notes, and find what is important to the singer/actor and what they can leave up to the pianist or director to attend to. This class is intended for beginner students who are new to musical theatre, choir, or voice lessons so they are not lost or feel overwhelmed when they are just beginning to learn music.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the basics of how to read what notes are on the music staff in treble clef, how to follow along in music with measure numbers or repeats, and learn to identify on the music the composer and lyricist, title, and the vocabulary of directions on how to perform the piece (such as "legato" or "forte").

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! I'm Sam and I teach musical theatre and Disney-themed classes. I am a theatre performance and musical theatre student at Chapman University and have been performing since I was eight years old. I have also directed and taught children's theatre courses. I emphasize being physically active in class and I encourage open discussion and asking lots of questions. Some fun facts about me: I am a Disneyland and Disney trivia superfan and have performed in over forty theatrical productions!
