Basics of Cell Biology: Learn the Organelles of an Animal Cell
Class experience
In this one-time class, students will learn the basic functions of each organelle inside an animal cell. This class can be taken as beginner level with no prior knowledge of a cell, or it can be taken as a refresher class for those who would like to brush up on their basic cellular biology. We will discuss each organelle in detail and its function. This class will be a combination of lecture and discussion. I encourage interaction and questions! The more participation, the better. Students will learn vocabulary terms such as organelle, eukaryotic, prokaryotic. We will discuss each of the organelles in an animal cell and discuss their functions. Organelles we will cover will be: cell membrane, nucleus, nucleolus, centrosome, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum (smooth and rough), golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, vesicles, ribosomes, cytoskeleton. We will discuss prokaryotic and eukaryotic. They will be able to distinguish the difference between the two. By the end of the class, students will be able to decide if an animal cell, plant cell, and bacteria cell is eukaryotic or prokaryotic.
