Art can be enjoyable and at the same time quite informational about what art really is. In this four day camp, learners will go over basic concepts and vocabulary related to art. Learners will apply what they learned, allowing for their own artistic style. Some featured projects will be inspired by famous artists. Using only basic supplies the class will be given step by step instructions. Day 1: color wheel - learners will create their own color wheel, learn about primary and secondary colors, plus complimentary, tint and shade. Materials - 9x12 drawing paper, a small plate for tracing circle, Sharpie or marker, paints (acrylic, tempura, or watercolors), paint brushes, cup of water, paper towel. Day 2: lines/shapes - learners will practice different lines and shapes on a piece of scratch paper. The class will also review the color wheel. The artist, Wassily Kandinsky will be introduced and his painting "Circles in a Circle" will be looked at and discussed. Learners will paint in the style of Kandinsky in their own composition. Materials - scratch paper, 9x12 drawing paper, Sharpie or marker, paints, brushes, water/towel. Day 3: landscape - learners will learn what makes up a landscape composition and examples will be shown. The class will also review the types of lines that will be used in the drawing. Materials - 9x12 drawing paper, pastels or crayons. Day 4: mixed media - learners will combine all the techniques they used in the past days; color, lines, composition, to create a painting in the style of Claude Monet's "Water Lilies and Japaneses Bridge." The class will use paints, pastels, and construction paper as mixed media. Materials - light blue, brown, green construction paper, paints, brushes, water/towel, pastels/crayons, scissors, glue. I believe in a playful process in creating art. Students will be asked to participate in discussions and sharing their progress along the way.
