Description

Class Experience

Learners will aquire an intermediate level of proficentcy with TinkerCad and be able create an original 3D design and if desired render a 3D creation in Java Minecraft.
Mrs. Fimbel has been teaching in public schools for ten years. She has taught TinkerCad to students in 3rd-5th grade for several years as part of an enrichment club designing board games. In early 2020 Mrs. Fimbel lead a workshop at the Texas Computer Educators Association convention about the using TinkerCad and the board game design project.
Each week a project will be assigned. The exact time to complete the project will depend on how detailed and elaborate the learner's solution is. A simple project could take 10 or 20 minutes but a more elaborate design could take hours. Learners are expected to take screen shots or videos of their projects and share them on Flipgrid. Learners are also expected to give feedback and encouragement to others.
A computer that can access Tinkercad and Flipgrid. At this time all instructional material will be presented from a windows PC using Windows 10. For Minecraft we will be using Minecraft Java version 1.12 students will learn how to use this version in class but will need to be using Java Minecraft. Students may like a notebook and pencils to sketch ideas.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Our work will be documented on Flipgrid. Learners are welcome to share it with their parents. Additionally, a formal transcript entry and grade are available upon request. Grade requests must be made at the start of the course.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Mrs. Fimbel will create guidelines and expectations for giving feedback, additionally the Flipgrid will be moderated. However, any time peer feedback is given there is a chance feelings may be hurt or learners may feel frustrated with their progress compared to others. Mrs. Fimbel encourages learners to participate at their own level and see personal progress while valuing others work. This is sometimes difficult for learners to handle, especially if it is their first experience in this environment. Please help prepare your learners by talking with them before class about their projects and what they are seeing other people create and how creations on every level are valued and important.
We will use Tinkercad.com and Flipgrid.com accounts will need to be made before class begins with parent permission. Please be aware that Tinkercad has a universal library of 3D items for searching. Mrs. Fimbel is not responsible for what your learners may search for or find. Adult supervision is suggested for using the search library.
