Class Experience

Let's continue to learn Spanish!

In this 5-day course, students will continue to learn basic Spanish language elements. Each class will give learners a chance to interact and practice their new skills with the teacher and classmates.
After having completed, Basic Spanish Camp part 1, students will be able to use the skills learned to build sentences and understand the basics of Spanish grammar. This course will focus more on important grammar elements that set the Spanish language apart from English.

🟢Day 1: Articles and Gender
One of the most notable differences between Spanish and English is that Spanish is a gendered language. For this reason, on day 1 we will focus on learning the concept of gender in the Spanish language (Masculine, Feminine) and how to identify the gender of nouns. We will also learn the articles (a, an, the) in Spanish and how they change based on the gender of the noun.

🟢Day 2: Singular and Plural
On the second day, we will learn the concept of singular and plural nouns in Spanish. We will focus on learning the rules for singular and plural nouns and how articles change for plural nouns.

🟢Day 3: Pronouns and Verb: to play
On this day, students will learn the subject pronouns in Spanish. They will also learn how to conjugate and use the verb “to play” in simple sentences.

🟢Day 4: Verbs: to have, to want
Students will use the skills learned on day 3 and apply them to the conjugation of the new verbs “to want” and “to have”. They will use these verbs to build sentences and share them with their classmates. On this day, students will be assigned to build, at least, three sentences at home using the words learned throughout the week.

🟢Day 5: Sentence Structure and Practice
On the last day of camp, students will use the vocabulary and skills learned throughout the week to build sentences independently and share them with their classmates. Also, students will have the chance to present sentences they created as part of day 4’s homework.

Students do not need previous knowledge of Spanish to participate in this course. However, it is highly recommended that students complete the first part of camp before signing up for this one.
Because this class is aimed at total beginners, classes will be taught in a bilingual format which means 30% in Spanish and 70% in English to make it less intimidating for students and to help them understand instructions clearly.

***The Spanish language is a gendered language, therefore, the concept of gender in linguistic terms is not perceived the same way it is in the English language. The language is also regulated by "La Real Academia de la Lengua Española" (RAE/ The Royal Academy of Spanish Language) which does not recognize the use of gender-inclusive pronouns. Some gender-inclusive pronouns have been created by Spanish-speaking communities, but they are not widely used nor officially recognized. I teach Puerto Rican Spanish as recognized by the “Academia Puertorriqueña de la Lengua Española” (Puerto Rican Academy of the Spanish Language) and the RAE; therefore, I will not be teaching gender-inclusive or neutral pronouns outside of those approved by the aforementioned institutions. ***
