Class Experience

RECENTLY UPDATED! After teaching my first round through this course and receiving helpful feedback, I have changed the structure to be one week with more meat on the bones, per se. Halfway through college, I was crippled with life's big questions - how will I get a job? Will I be able to start a family? How can I afford a house? Will I retire joyfully or unsure of my investment accounts? My lack of confidence in my answers has led me down a road of educating myself on personal finance and spreading this knowledge to others around me. Far too often teens go to college with insufficient expertise on finances and are still dealing with decisions that were made in their 20s even into their 40s.

This course will equip students with knowledge and skills to be financially dependent and prepared for college, career, and beyond! The first four sessions of the course will be instructional and cover the fundamentals of personal finance - savings, budgeting, loans, and investing. These lessons will be a mixture of lecture and discussion. I will use PowerPoint slides for learners to engage with as well as fill-in-the-blank sheets. There will be practice problems that students will complete in class and then interact with one another as they share about the decisions they made. The final session will be a decision-based game where students will choose their college, career, family, and retirement goals. At each phase in the game, students will need to adjust their savings plan, re-create a budget, decide on loans, and keep up with their retirement account. Students will be required to make budgets, handle the "curveballs" of life, and practice the things they learned in the first four weeks.
Lesson 1 - Fundamental A: Savings
Lesson 2 - Fundamental B: Budgeting
Lesson 3 - Fundamental C: Loans
Lesson 4 - Fundamental D: Investing
Lesson 5 - Life Budgeting Game: College, Career, Family, Retirement!

Learning Goals

Students will grasp an understanding of basic financial principles and gain experience practicing what they have learned.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello students and parents! I am Jacob Prince. I live in Charlotte, NC with my high-school heart wife and our two kiddos! I have been working with students of all ages for 7 years, but as part of my full-time job with middle and high school students for the past 4 years. I would love to focus on teaching students about the power of money, what it is, how it's used, and all the personal finance skills I was never taught growing up. My degree and background are in Finance & Banking which gives me expertise, knowledge, and passion for the subject! I have also been teaching students (ages 5-12) online for 1 year. My style of teaching utilizes fill in the blank worksheets, props, and everyone's favorite - fun facts! Being from North Carolina, I love college football, Cheerwine (a local soda), and being outdoors!
