Students will develop and communicate their ideas to explain a topic of their choice through the structure of the five paragraph essay. This class is about learning to use the structure of the essay to clearly explain one's ideas to a general audience. The prompts are designed so that the writer will be the expert on the chosen topic and will not need to do research or provide citations. This way we can focus specifically on the format and the writing. We'll review basic paragraph construction and cover the components of an essay, including: - the hook - the thesis statement - evidential support - clear transitions - a conclusion that shows why your information matters Day 1: Using Google Slides, I'll introduce essay components and their importance in delivering the author's information. We'll read and analyze a model essay, allowing students to identify the components and see how they do their jobs in practice. We'll discuss our class rubric for evaluating the essays, and how these can be used as a writing guide. Students will then select a prompt from those I provide, or propose their own topic. Students will fill out their essay outlines and begin crafting their paragraphs in the time remaining. Day 2: Students will complete first drafts of their essays and receive feedback on these to guide their revisions Students will check their essays against the rubric criteria If time remains, students will begin their final drafts Day 3: Students will work on implementing their revisions and will try to complete final drafts of their five paragraph essays. After the conclusion of our third class session, students have 24 hours to submit their final essay to me. I'll provide written feedback/evaluation for each essay submitted on time within 36 hours of receiving the essay. I'll provide an individualized Google Doc for each learner in which s/he can write the essay. This allows for collaboration in class and facilitates feedback.
