Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
In this course, we will learn about the history of Major League Baseball through the lens of its statistics. This is not a beginner's course. Students must understand the basics of baseball and it's main statistics (batting average, ERA, Hits, Home Runs...).

If your student is interested, I teach a two-week-long Baseball Stats 101 course that would be the better option before joining this class. https://outschool.com/classes/baseball-stats-101-making-sense-of-the-numbers-behind-americas-pastime-omcBwVZq

We will focus on the statistics of the game and how they help to tell the story of the league. We'll also learn about changes that have occurred in baseball over the years, awards, milestones, anecdotes, and much more. We will have player comparisons, talk about how different eras and rule changes affect stats, and learn about some players that students may otherwise never meet.

In contrast to my other, lecture-based sports courses, this is an open, relaxed, discussion-based environment where students can chat with each other and share their thoughts and opinions on the subjects.

While the topics will change class-to-class, with the learners deciding much of the content, we will often begin with a leading question or subject to kick off the discussion.

We will make use of Baseball-reference.com - the leading baseball statistics website, along with video clips from Youtube.
Students will come away with a better understanding of the sport, its history, and knowledge with which to better enjoy the game in the future.
